Supporting Para Sports Through Clothing!? What Is the “Fukunowa Project” Being Implemented in Dagaya Sandou?
Hello. In this blog post, we will introduce the “Fukunowa Project,” which is being implemented in the currently trending
area of Dagaya Sandou, which encompasses Sendagaya and Kita-Sando where SSU’s headquarters is located.
The “Fukunowa Project” involves placing clothing collection boxes in offices and public facilities,
having the collected clothing purchased by reuse specialists, and donating the proceeds to para sports-related organizations. It is an initiative to support para sports through the reuse of clothing and bags sleeping in closets and to expand the circle of “fuku” (fortune/clothing)!
Dagaya Sandou was selected as one of the implementation sites for the “Fukunowa Project” because it is an area with high affinity to sports, where the New National Stadium and Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium are located.
Incidentally, in this area, collection boxes will be installed until Wednesday, February 21 at Sendagaya Elementary School (students and faculty only), Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Hatomori Hachiman Shrine,
Athlonia Triathlon Concept Shop, and Tokyo Tomin Bank Head Office, among others. (For detailed collection hours and other areas, please visit the website.)
The “Fukunowa Project” website includes this passage:
“Japan is one of the world’s leading fashion trend centers and a major consumer of clothing. However, compared to other developed countries, the infrastructure for clothing reuse and recycling is lagging, with approximately 1 million tons (*) of clothing being discarded annually, of which 70% is incinerated as combustible waste.
Meanwhile, although the support system from the government and corporations for the para sports community has improved over the past year or two, the financial burden on athletes and sports organizations remains significant.
(Omitted) If you put your clothing into the reuse cycle through the Fukunowa Project, your former favorite item may become someone else’s favorite piece somewhere in the world.
And the proceeds will certainly be used to develop para sports.”

The “Fukunowa Project” was named with the hope that from “fuku” (clothing) sleeping in closets, a circle of “fuku” (fortune) would be created that brings smiles to everyone involved.
In 2020, the piece sleeping in your closet might be what supports the Paralympians active here in Dagaya Sandou. Why not participate in this project that supports para sports?
