Hello, everyone! I am Hamada from SUNNY SIDE UP.

As we enter June, we are beginning to feel the first signs of summer. Many of you may already be planning where to go for your summer vacation. Summer in Kyoto is truly enchanting, with beautiful scenes created by historic streets and events such as the Gion Festival, Gozan no Okuribi, and riverside dining (Kawayuka).

On the other hand, summer in Kyoto is also known for the intense heat characteristic of a basin. Since you are going through the effort of heading out, many of you are likely looking for spots where you can avoid the daytime heat and create special memories with family and friends in a cool indoor environment.

For those seeking such an experience, we highly recommend the latest high-profile spot, teamLab BioVortex Kyoto – Taisei Corporation (hereafter referred to as teamLab BioVortex Kyoto), for which SUNNY SIDE UP provided PR support during its opening!

In this article, our PR representative will introduce the charms of teamLab BioVortex Kyoto.

What is teamLab BioVortex Kyoto, the New Art Space Born in Kyoto?

teamLab BioVortex Kyoto is one of Japan’s largest teamLab art museums, which opened on October 7, 2025, within walking distance of Kyoto Station. Based on the theme of “Universe of Existence, Universe of Perception,” it serves as a place where one can sense the possibilities of new forms of existence and expand their perception.

It has become a major attraction, surpassing 500,000 visitors (*) in February of this year, just five months after its opening.

The concept of the museum is “Environmental Phenomena,” where the environment produces phenomena, and those phenomena create existence. In other words, it is not art to be viewed in silence; it is a place for participatory art experiences where we ourselves become part of the work, and the art changes continuously based on people’s movements and the environment.

The vast space of approximately 10,000 square meters features over 50 works, including pieces being shown in Japan for the first time. Furthermore, there are extensive areas such as the “Athletics Forest,” where visitors can enjoy moving their bodies, and “Learn! Future Park,” where people can freely create a world together. The museum is full of features that allow everyone from adults to children to return to their childhood and play with abandon—creatures you draw swim across the walls and floors, and lights burst in response to your movements. There is also a “Sketch Factory” where you can turn the creatures you have drawn into gifts to take home, making it perfect for creating special summer memories!

“Megaliths in the Open Microcosm”

Overwhelming Immersion! Featured Works You Cannot Miss

From here, we have selected three featured works that we particularly recommend experiencing among the many pieces on display.

“Sculpture of No Mass and No Shape”

One of the representative works embodying the museum’s concept of Environmental Phenomena is “Sculpture of No Mass and No Shape,” which is being exhibited in Japan for the first time. Stepping into the space, you are greeted by a mysterious, dreamlike sight of giant bubble sculptures floating weightlessly in the air.

These bubble sculptures constantly change shape, breaking apart or merging with other masses to grow larger. Even more surprising is that even if you reach out and touch these masses, they do not completely break. Even if they are deformed by someone bumping into them, they slowly repair their shape and maintain their existence. Immersing yourself in these ever-changing, shapeless sculptures may feel like a childhood dream of “walking through the clouds” has finally come true.

“Transforming Continuum”

Next is “Transforming Continuum,” which offers a mystical experience as if you were in the middle of outer space.

The masses of glowing spheres floating in the space are not physical objects, but new sculptures formed by the order of energy created by the environment. Similar to “Sculpture of No Mass and No Shape,” they repair themselves even if a person enters the sculpture with their whole body or disrupts its shape. Another interesting point is that even if you try to change their shape or move them with physical force, you cannot move their existence. Please experience this mysterious space where countless spheres are constantly being replaced yet continue to exist as a single entity.

“Megaliths in an Open Microcosm”

The final piece we would like to introduce is “Megaliths in the Open Microcosm,” a work created specifically for this museum that can only be seen here. It is a space that feels like wandering into ancient ruins, where masses from a different space-time (Megaliths) stand among real plants, primarily moss. The Megaliths feature works such as flowers and flowing water, allowing visitors to enjoy a different appearance each time they visit. Occasionally, water falls like rain, providing a cool and fantastical atmosphere.

Since you can experience different scents and sounds in each artwork space, please sharpen your five senses and enjoy the experience!
