Sweets from a 3D Printer?! Experience the Latest 3D Printing Technology! I Created My Own Figure!

Hello!

I am Suzuki, a 2014 new graduate hire at Wise Integration, a member of the SUNNY SIDE UP GROUP!
In this report, I will share my experience creating a figure with a 3D printer as part of our new internal research activity, “Monozukuri Lab”!

By the way, what is “Monozukuri Lab”…?

It is a research activity launched by Wise Integration this term. One of our company’s strengths is the ability to actually manufacture the products we plan! This research activity aims to increase our sensitivity to information by engaging with the latest manufacturing sites regarding such “monozukuri” (craftsmanship).

Now, the theme for the memorable first session of Wise Integration’s “Monozukuri Lab” is the much-talked-about latest equipment: the “3D Printer”!

At the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, which showcases the world’s top advertising and communication cases, Yahoo! JAPAN’s “Hands on Search” using 3D printing technology
won an award. 3D printing technology is a hot topic for many reasons.

Therefore,
while many of you may already be familiar with it, I would like to explain 3D printers once again.

A “3D printer” is,
a device that creates three-dimensional objects based on blueprints created on a computer. As long as you have the printer and the drawings, this excellent machine can produce everything from large items like sports cars to small items like screws.
Furthermore, it seems that even sweets can be made with printers these days…!

Using the “ChefJet Pro,” which was unveiled at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas this January, it is possible to create candies and sugar crafts of any size or shape from sugar, water, and flavoring! It is scheduled for release around the end of 2014, and it is predicted that the 3D printing industry will become an even bigger boom in 2014. It seems applicable to various projects! It is very exciting.

I Tried Making a Figure with a 3D Printer!

I went to experience such a 3D printer firsthand!

We received cooperation from “iJet.”
They are a group of 3D printing professionals who handle everything from 3D data capture to the actual production of figures!

While standing on a turntable used for scanning and rotating slowly, four cameras simultaneously take approximately 120 photos. The scanning process is completed in just 50 seconds!

Scanning the entire body while rotating slowly. (Be careful not to move during this time!)
A short while after shooting, the approximately 120 photos are automatically combined, and the 3D data appears!

Even the shape of the clothes is preserved…

After about 15 minutes, color is added, and it gradually looks exactly like me!!
It is completely me now. (Laughs)
Afterward, this 3D data is sent to the printer, and the actual figure is created!

Gypsum powder is layered bit by bit to create height and form the scanned data. The figure I made this time is about 10 cm in size, and it can be output in about 4 hours (including editing work, it takes 1 to 2 days)! I have heard that when we used to make products, the process of creating molds took many days, so I was surprised by this sense of speed.

The finished figure is so realistic that I was surprised and so happy that I couldn’t stop staring at it…

Many people in the office also gave me their seal of approval, saying, “It looks just like you!” By actually experiencing the 3D printer that is currently a hot topic, I was surprised by the ease and speed beyond my imagination, and I was able to feel the latest technology more closely than ever before!
In the future, by leveraging Wise Integration’s strengths in “monozukuri,” I intend to “rack my brains” to think of newer and more interesting ways to use 3D printers and turn ideas that surprise everyone into reality!

Wise Integration’s “Monozukuri Lab” plans to continue conducting various research in the future.
As a member of the SUNNY SIDE UP GROUP, please look forward to the “fun commotions” we will create in the future!
