When we posted about it on our official social media, we received a great response, with comments like “So interesting!” and “It motivated me!” Thank you!
With that said, we would like to briefly introduce the book!

Calbee, DeNA, Stripe International, Kengo Kuma & Associates, Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, SUNNY SIDE UP—an in-depth look at the skills and thinking of 13 people who support and drive outstanding leaders!
Toru Uesaka, author of “Pro-ron,” which has sold over 400,000 copies, interviews the aces working “around” 6 energetic, fast-moving business leaders. They take action and deliver without flinching, even when faced with unreasonable demands from the top, such as “Increase sales from 3 billion yen to 10 billion yen.” Their candid voices are packed with hints you can apply to your own work.
A must-have business book like no other, focusing on those who work “around the president”!

If there are executives praised as “amazing,” then surely there are “high performers” around them, right?! And so, for this project, President Tsugihara was also approached (for some reason!).
With so many renowned executives listed, it was truly, truly intimidating—but in many ways, President Tsugihara is indeed “amazing!” (laughs)

The book introduces the work skills of Vice President Matsumoto, who has supported President Tsugihara for many years, and Tanimura, Deputy Head of the President’s Office, who currently works in the closest position to the president.

[Vice President Matsumoto]
Vice President Matsumoto was President Tsugihara’s classmate in high school and has lived his life together with her at SUNNY SIDE UP—so to speak, he is the face of SUNNY SIDE UP!
He talks about everything from first meeting President Tsugihara when they entered high school, to the days when just a handful of employees kept coming up with fun ideas nonstop, and all the way to the present, with more than 150 employees.
While there are ways he can be close to President Tsugihara, he also understands that, even as a best friend and colleague who has worked alongside her, there are “parts you can never truly be close to as a manager.” From the interview, it came through that, in his own way, President Matsumoto has supported President Tsugihara and the company.

[Deputy Head of the President’s Office: Tanimura]
Tanimura, the second person featured, works closest to the president right now—and it would not be an exaggeration to say she receives the most “tough asks”! (laughs)
Her main mission is to turn the various matters that come directly to President Tsugihara into concrete form.
For major projects that move society, she clarifies with the president what role the company will take on, then connects the discussion to the right people and on-site members at the right time. This applies not only to client work, but to everything, including internal company matters. She takes in the president’s desire to always think about employees’ (members’) happiness, and shapes that desire into something that is not one-way, so that both sides can be Hpaay. While supporting President Tsugihara, I believe she is also a behind-the-scenes pillar of support for the company.
Not simply because she works “around the president,” but because her work methods and approach to work have many points people can relate to.

The stories from people at other companies were also truly interesting—and all highly informative. I am genuinely grateful for this wonderful opportunity!
There are sure to be many moments where you will want to say out loud, “Exactly, exactly!”!!
Please do give it a read!
