Planning and Presentation Skills to Stand Out! After-School Internship Report

Nice to meet you, everyone! My name is Shin Nunoshita, a student at the Faculty of International Politics and Economics, Nishogakusha University, and I participated in this “After-School Internship” Planning and Presentation Workshop! As a quick side note, my surname is read as “Nunoshita”! I have yet to meet anyone else with the same name! (laughs)

I first came across SUNNY SIDE UP by chance while browsing a list of internships on a website. (I personally like to think of it as a fateful encounter…)

Although I was interested in the PR and marketing industry, I didn’t know what kind of knowledge I needed. I fell in love with this unique internship where experts from various fields teach us their know-how directly, and I immediately applied for all five workshops.

When I arrived at the SUNNY SIDE UP office, the first thing I spotted was a giant fried egg! The office was very attractive, with various athlete memorabilia on display.

①Not only the office, but the people were also very charming; everyone answered my questions cheerfully. I was nervous when I first started the After-School Internship, but from the second session onward, I couldn’t wait for the next one. I truly felt that a company with the slogan “Let’s Have Fun!” is full of bright people who are a joy to talk to!

I attended all five STEP 1 workshops of the “After-School Internship,” not just this Planning and Presentation session. The program consists of five workshops: PR, Logical Thinking, Marketing, Promotion, and finally, Planning and Presentation. Every session was profound and required a lot of thought, but for me, this final workshop was the most challenging! I used my brain so much that I think it was practically sweating (laughs).

In the Planning and Presentation Workshop, professionals from the Planning Department at SUNNY SIDE UP, who handle various projects and presentations, gave lectures based on their own experiences. They covered mindsets for planning, procedures for deriving solutions, and presentation techniques.

②The lecture was divided into three parts: Planning, Presentation, and Group Work.

First, in the Planning part, we learned about the structure of the PR industry, including advertising agencies and SUNNY SIDE UP. We also covered how to identify issues by looking at objectives, goals, and social trends, how to find angles for solutions, and how to use the 5W1H method to generate ideas. Through the talk, I understood how specialized this industry is. Even though I knew the term 5W1H, I didn’t know how to apply it, so I want to start practicing and incorporating it into my university classes and other activities!

In the Presentation part, we learned various techniques, such as word choice and how to incorporate specific examples. I have given several presentations at school and thought I was reasonably good at it, but I realized there are still many areas where I fall short. The words that left a particularly strong impression during the lecture were “organization” and “to become a good presenter, become a good conversationalist.”

I reaffirmed that to come up with a new plan, it is vital to thoroughly “organize” the current situation from its foundations. Regarding “becoming a good conversationalist to become a good presenter,” I heard that a good conversationalist is someone who considers how the other person feels and can gain empathy . Such a person can also leave an impression and gain empathy during a presentation. I felt that if I am mindful even in casual, everyday conversations , it can serve as practice for presenting .

After the lecture, we had a short break followed by group work. The theme for this group work was to devise measures to increase the number of visitors to a certain facility in Tokyo. We put the lecture into practice, working together to refine who, when, where, what, why, and how to communicate our ideas!

The photo below shows our team during the group work. Since we were perfectly divided into three men and three women in each row, the instructor nicknamed us “Team Matchmaking Party” (laughs). Thanks to that, everyone who was nervous at first started talking more, and we managed to exchange opinions and put a plan together within the time limit!

③Since this is a Planning and Presentation Workshop, once the plan is refined, the next step is the presentation! It was a great opportunity to have the instructor critique each team’s presentation. Each group’s content was unique, and I found myself constantly impressed, thinking, “I never thought of it that way!”

During the presentations, everyone made an effort to speak in their own words while paying attention to the techniques taught in the lecture, such as intonation, pausing, and making eye contact.

The instructor was very approachable and occasionally made jokes, which helped ease everyone’s tension.

④After the group work and the Planning and Presentation Workshop concluded, many people went to ask individual questions or exchange opinions. My circle of friends expanded through the group work, so I am looking forward to seeing everyone again at the next step!

Before taking this workshop, I didn’t understand how plans were created, and my experience with presentations was limited to what I did in school. However, after attending this lecture, I was extremely satisfied as I not only improved my presentation skills but also heard advice that will be useful for my future job hunting.

The After-School Internship is recommended not only for those aspiring to enter the PR industry but also for those who don’t yet know how to approach job hunting or haven’t decided on a preferred industry. Participating in the After-School Internship has increased my motivation, and I feel it will be helpful for future self-analysis and my approach to interviews. Since the job-hunting season will soon begin in earnest, I want to make the most of this experience!

Furthermore, since STEP 2 is still ahead, I want to “organize” everything I’ve learned in the workshops so far to achieve good results!

That’s all from me, Nunoshita, regarding the Planning and Presentation Workshop! Everyone, please remember my name (laughs)!
