An office-time-boosting idea created by our team members! An easy recipe: “Microwave Omurice”

Hello! I’m Miki Ogawa from the Sports team in Division 3. I joined the company as a new graduate in 2014, and I have now entered my eighth year.

You can read the article in which I was previously interviewed together with my fellow new hires here.
SPECIAL INTERVIEW vol.1 “Create the version of yourself that can do what you want” — What five colleagues in their sixth year at the company discussed again, looking back.

Recently, I have had many opportunities to introduce myself to new graduate members and mid-career hires, and every time I say “eighth year,” it feels strange. When did all this time pass…

I thought I was still a junior member, but when I look around, there are overwhelmingly more juniors than seniors, and it makes me pause. I think, “I need to pull myself together a bit more.” “I need to act more composed.”

That said, I am fortunate to still have many reliable (and indulgent) seniors I can continue to lean on, so I will keep doing so with all my might. To all my seniors, thank you in advance for your continued support.

Now then, everyone, you are aware that our office has become so stylish it is almost unrecognizable, aren’t you? We renovated it last November, and it has become a very modern office that makes you want to invite people over! I cannot count how many times the central kitchen’s egg-on-rice has saved me.

Please see here for the full look at the new office.
Our new office, packed with “fun commotion,” is finally complete! What does the office look like that makes each person’s “fun” a reality? [Hello, New Office!!]

One day, as I was working in that comfortable office, I noticed a junior colleague, Sae Makino (sixth year at the company, nicknamed “Makky”), bustling around in the central kitchen.

And there was a wonderful aroma in the air. Drawn by the smell, I went closer—and to my surprise, she was making omurice!!

“Wait, how?”

“I thought it might work, so I tried it in the microwave—and it did!”

I was impressed that young minds are so flexible and come up with truly interesting ideas. I must keep my mind flexible as well…

When we renovated the office, no one would have expected a member to start cooking in the central kitchen. And whether she realized it or not, it was an egg dish that is so like our company. (As expected of Makky.)

Instead of microwaving convenience-store omurice, she made it from scratch herself.

It was such an easy recipe that only requires a plate and a microwave, so I negotiated with Makky, the creator of the recipe, and received permission to share her secret recipe as a special feature!

Here is the recipe for “Microwave Omurice,” created by Sae Makino of SUNNY SIDE UP!

-Ingredients-
• 1 bowl of rice (our Smile Keeper cooks it for us every day)
• 2 eggs (always stocked in our office fridge)
• 3 sausages (purchased at a convenience store)
• 1 slice of melting cheese (apparently “two slices when I’m feeling good.” Also purchased at a convenience store)
• Ketchup, to taste (always stocked in our condiment area)
• Mayonnaise, to taste (always stocked in our condiment area)
• Salt and pepper, to taste (always stocked in our condiment area)

Ingredients for omurice

During filming of the cooking scene, she changed it to “Two eggs after all!” so the photo shows one egg. Thank you for your understanding. Please adjust the number of eggs to your preference.

-Steps-

① Tear the sausages into 1 cm pieces and microwave at 600 W for 20 seconds without covering with plastic wrap
② Mix the warmed sausages, rice, ketchup (Makky: “a good amount”), and salt and pepper

③ Add mayonnaise to the eggs (Makky: “just a little”) and whisk well
④ Line a flat but slightly deep plate with plastic wrap (less washing up!), then pour in the egg mixture from ③

⑤ Microwave at 600 W for 2 minutes. Check partway through and take it out once; before the eggs fully set, stir them with chopsticks.

Makky: “Don’t you feel like stirring once makes it a little fluffier?”

⑤ Put the rice from ② into a bowl, shape it, flip it onto a plate, add the cheese, and microwave at 600 W for 40 seconds (Makky: “As long as the cheese melts, it’s OK.”)

⑥ Gently slide the egg off the plastic wrap and place it on top of the rice.

⑦ Finally, because it’s omurice—add ketchup, and it is done.

Everyone chimed in, “Wait, Makky—aren’t you going to write something like a fried egg or ‘SSU’ there?” But for now, it is complete.

Professor Makky and her omurice. By the way, she is currently blonde.

And the most important part—the taste…

Incredibly delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!

We filmed the cooking scene (as usual) in a lively, lighthearted mood, but when we tried it, we were genuinely shocked by how delicious it was!

Our blog editor-in-chief happened to pass by, so we had them try it, and they praised it highly, saying, “This is delicious!”

It takes 10 minutes, requires minimal washing up, and is easy to make in the microwave: “Microwave Omurice.” With more opportunities for “time at home” and “stay home” these days, we hope you will try it at the office or at home!

Now then, what kind of idea dish will Professor Makky make next?

Stay tuned.

By the way, in the central kitchen, sweets are also made by arranging clients’ snacks, and they are even used for PR! Please be sure to take a look at this as well.
A PR strategy that creates a new way to enjoy classic snacks! We want to stir up some “snack” commotion! Introducing a case study from the Tohato confectionery team
