Hello! I am Kiyota from the Social Relations Department.

Out of curiosity, have any of you ever visited Nagasaki Prefecture?
Nagasaki is currently buzzing with excitement, sparked by redevelopment following the opening of the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen in 2022! Nagasaki is a city that still retains an exotic atmosphere, having served as a hub for international exchange through Dejima during Japan’s long period of national isolation. On December 13, 2024, a new landmark for the city, “Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street,” opened its doors in this historic area!

SUNNY SIDE UP is in charge of the PR for this opening. Today, from my perspective as a PR representative, I would like to share the charms of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street, where you can fully immerse yourself in Nagasaki’s history and culture. Through this article, I hope you will not only discover the appeal of the hotel but also learn more about SUNNY SIDE UP and our extensive work in regional revitalization PR!

A New Landmark in Minamiyamate, Nagasaki

Minamiyamate-machi in Nagasaki City, where Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street is located, sits on a hill overlooking Nagasaki Port. It is an area rich in exoticism, where foreign consulates and residences once stood side-by-side as a foreign settlement during the late Edo and Meiji periods.

A key feature of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street is its definition of the surrounding area as the “neighborhood,” incorporating the local history and the passion of its people into the hotel experience.

During the six-month pre-opening PR period, our goal was to promote not only the hotel itself—the brand’s first foray into Kyushu—but also the “neighborhood.” We organized tours of the surrounding area during media stay events. Additionally, we conducted PR activities to showcase the charms of Nagasaki City, such as collaborating with a local choir for the opening ceremony.

We would like to introduce this new landmark in Nagasaki’s Minamiyamate-machi, featuring scenes from the “Media Preview” held prior to the official opening!

Expressing the Memories of Old Nagasaki: Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street

One of the primary attractions of the newly opened Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street is the opportunity to fully experience Nagasaki’s unique “Waka-Ran” culture. This culture evolved uniquely in Nagasaki through the intersection of customs and traditions from Portugal, the Netherlands, and China. It has grown rich and diverse over the centuries and continues to be passed down as a core part of Nagasaki’s identity today.

Based on the concept of a “Waka-Ran Labyrinth Traveling Through Time,” the hotel’s unique and exotic decor makes every guest’s journey truly special. It is a one-of-a-kind hotel where one can truly feel the weight of history.

A preserved and repurposed statue of Saint Michael is installed within an exotic arched window, welcoming visitors to the hotel. You can feel the history even in details like this!

The lobby lounge features a unique design characteristic of Nagasaki, including rugs with a modern interpretation of Dejima’s fan shape and elements of the pseudo-Western architecture found in Minamiyamate.
As soon as you step into the hotel, you are greeted by a lobby that embodies the essence of Nagasaki’s culture.

Experience the Extraordinary in Modern Guest Rooms with an Exotic Atmosphere

There are 10 types of modern guest rooms, all reflecting an exotic atmosphere.

Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street features three suites in total, one of which, the “Capitan Garden Terrace Suite,” comes equipped with a private garden.

Depending on the room, guests can enjoy the original ceiling structures of the former Maria-en or charming white arched windows, allowing for a relaxing view of Nagasaki Bay accompanied by the sound of steamship whistles.

If you are lucky, you can experience an extraordinary moment by enjoying the night view alongside a luxury cruise ship anchored in Nagasaki Bay. In fact, during my stay, I encountered a luxury liner at anchor and was able to enjoy a stunning night view from my room! Additionally, some rooms offer views of the harbor fireworks during the summer festival, so please be sure to check those out.

One of the design highlights is the installation of folding screen (byobu) graphics in the guest rooms. The screens in the Main Building depict the exotic mountainous landscape unique to this area as seen from the hotel. Meanwhile, the screens in the North Building depict Nagasaki Port with the hotel and Dutch ships that visited from foreign lands. Through these folding screen motifs, guests can experience the special atmosphere where local exoticism and sanctity intersect.

A Restaurant to Savor Nagasaki’s Ingredients, Adorned with Beautifully Shimmering Stained Glass

The interior of “Restaurant Catedra Cla,” where you can enjoy Nagasaki’s local ingredients and food culture, is also a must-see.
Since the restaurant was converted from a former chapel, guests can enjoy a special dining experience in a space surrounded by beautiful stained glass.

I visited the site from early morning until evening and into the night during preparations for the preview, and I felt it was a truly unique space that shows different expressions depending on the time of day! It is a symbolic location that I hope you will visit in person to experience its spatial charm.

The signature dinner course “Blanche,” which uses carefully selected ingredients from Nagasaki, features seasonal seafood and Nagasaki Wagyu beef en croûte.

Minamiyamate-machi is Full of Other Historic Spots!

Minamiyamate-machi, the home of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street, features famous spots within Nagasaki Prefecture such as “Glover Garden”—a World Heritage site that brings together the former residences of foreigners like the adventurous merchant Thomas Glover and other Western-style buildings scattered throughout the city—and “Oura Church,” the oldest church in Japan. The area is bustling with tourists and students on school trips.
Furthermore, the area offers the “Mt. Inasa Night View,” recognized as one of the World’s New Three Great Night Views, allowing visitors to enjoy breathtaking scenery alongside foreign culture.

With the opening of the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen in 2022, Nagasaki Prefecture is drawing attention for its “once-in-a-century” redevelopment.

We invite you to visit the newly established Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street in this city that once flourished as Dejima, and immerse yourself in the history and culture of Nagasaki.
